It seems each winter gets longer and longer, but we’re now finally entering Spring. As the weather starts to warm up, it’s a good time to take a look at your home’s plumbing and do some preventative maintenance.
Here are a few tips to help you get ready for Spring:
1. Inspect your indoor and outdoor pipes and faucets for leaks or damage
Has your water bill changed significantly, but you haven’t been using more water than usual? Even smaller leaks can cause extreme amounts of damage to your home.
2. Flush your drains with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar
Run hot water for a minute or two and then drop ½ cup of baking soda down the drain, allowing it to sit for 10-15 minutes. Add a cup of vinegar and allow it to fizz with the baking soda for a few minutes. Then run hot water again. You can repeat these steps until it reaches your satisfaction.
3. Inspect your water heater for any leaks or corrosion
Have you noticed your hot water having any discoloration? If it’s a red, orange, or brownish tint, that may be a sign that rust from your water heater is polluting your water supply. Check for leaks around the water heater – even a small puddle could lead to big effects.
4. Check your water pressure and adjust if necessary
Place a 1-liter measuring jug under your shower head or tap. Turn on the water and count how long it takes to fill up. If it takes more than 6 seconds, that usually means your water pressure is low.
5. Have your plumbing professionally inspected and tuned up
