Spring is a busy season for plumbers. Here are three common problems homeowners encounter this time of year and what you can do to prevent them.
Pipe Expansion and Contraction
Spring is a time for rapidly changing temperatures, and this can cause your pipes to expand and contract as water freezes and thaws. Wrap exposed pipes in foam insulation to protect them from extreme temperatures and let faucets drip slowly on very cold days.
Problems from Vegetation Growth
You may think nothing of the large trees growing near your house, but as the roots wake up and begin pressing downward in search of nutrients, they’ll hit the jackpot when they find your sewage line. Roots can penetrate even the smallest holes in the line where they’ll settle and grow into a major blockage. Be sure that you know where your pipes are before planting new trees and shrubs, and consider a sewer inspection if your drains are running slowly.
If we find a root obstruction, we’ll hydro-jet the line to clear it. Once free of roots, your water pressure and draining will return to normal.
Sump Pump Malfunctions
If you’re like many homeowners, you rely on your sump pump to keep your basement dry each spring. However, if your sump pump is not working properly, you could quickly end up with a flooded basement, ruined flooring and damaged furniture. Before spring rains hit, test your sump pump by pouring a bucket of water into the sump. If your pump does not work as it should, possible problems could include the following:
-
Plugged screen
-
Frozen drainage pipe
-
Tripped circuit breaker
