3 Toilet Maintenance Challenges

When it comes to the bathroom, one thing anyone does not want to hear is that the toilet is not working. In most cases the reason is due to a clog, but there are plenty of other reasons why the toilet may be on the blink.

Sometimes it may be due to a worn out or damaged part that is allowing it to run non-stop, wasting gallon after gallon of water. In other instances, the toilet may be old and have worn out parts or simply be too inefficient to use, making replacement necessary.

Whatever the case may be, here is some more information about some of the most common toilet maintenance challenges that may occur in your Ruston home.

The Hissing Toilet

If a toilet sounds like it’s always hissing and never stops running, it could be due to a flapper valve that has become too damaged from being old. In these cases, a plumber should be summoned to replace the valve as soon as possible.

If this is not the problem, a corroded overflow pipe or broken flush valve assembly could also be the problem. In any case, lots of water is being wasted. Toilets with this problem can waste as much as 200 gallons of water per day, creating huge water bills each month for the homeowners.

The Inefficient Toilet

A big maintenance challenge for many people is trying to decide if they need a new toilet in the first place. The general rule of today’s plumbers is that if a toilet was made before 1994, it should be replaced because it’s simply too inefficient.

An older toilet will use 3.5 gallons of water per flush, while newer ones use only 1.6 gallons per flush. This difference can add up quickly, so installing a new toilet can greatly reduce water usage and the monthly water bills.

The Clogged Toilet

Nothing is more dreaded than a clogged toilet, so if this happens a plumber will probably need to be called to solve the problem. Some clogs may be small ones and stay in the trap or drainpipe, but others will become larger and work their way into the home’s sewer line.

If this happens, expect a big repair and a big bill to go with it once it’s completed. To keep clogs from happening, use high-grade toilet paper that dissolves quickly and don’t put anything out of the ordinary in the toilet of your Ruston home.
